"If I'm a protein, the last word I want to hear is ubiquitination, because that means I'm about to be degraded."

Once targeted by ubiquitin, proteins are unfolded, chopped into peptides, and recycled or discarded. This final step in the regulation of gene expression ensures that proteins don't persist longer than needed or interfere with new regulatory signals.

From a trait question to a protein

The supplied DNA-to-traits transcript uses eye pigment to connect a visible trait with genes and proteins. DNA contains information for proteins that contribute to pigment production, but the DNA does not directly assemble the pigment. produces an RNA message, and translation uses that message to assemble a protein.
